What type of writing is One Thousand Words looking for?

  • One Thousand Words is eager to read your literary flash fiction inspired by our issue image.
  • As our name suggests, we publish artwork-inspired prose that does not exceed “one thousand words.”
  • We seek writing near 250 words, allowing us to highlight four authors per issue without exceeding our target 1000 word count.
  • Consider purchasing a prior issue for inspiration. 


Will I be paid for my work?

  • One Thousand Words offers authors of accepted manuscripts $25 in exchange for First Serial North American rights.
  • All rights revert to the author upon publication.


 Does One Thousand Words accept simultaneous submissions?

  • Yes, but please notify us immediately if your submission is accepted for publication elsewhere.


When are you open for submissions?

  • One Thousand Words is a semi-annual publication. We are currently closed for submissions. Please LIKE us on Facebook for updates on submission opportunities.


 While we love to say "YES," sometimes we must say "No."

  • No previously published works (in print or online)
  • No translations
  • No updates are permitted after stories are submitted


How do I submit to One Thousand Words?




  • Do not include your contact information anywhere in your submission. 
  • You will receive an email confirming your submission and your Submittable.com dashboard will reflect your submission’s current status. 

 

Why do you charge for submissions?

  • One Thousand Words charges a $3.00 fee to cover the costs of our online submission service and to allow us to reward our authors, photographers and editors. Thank you for supporting flash fiction.
